(NASHVILLE, Tenn.) October 14, 1999 - The Guy Smiley Blues Exchange would like to announce GSBE radio: a streaming MP3 netcast server that broadcasts the band's music 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Among the first artists to utilize this technolgy, GSBE radio broadcasts music for the masses all day, everyday! If you have a quick connection to the net (anything faster than a modem), you can listen to their stream all day long. For those with modem connections, The Guy Smiley Blues Exchange anticipates having a second streaming server active in November for slower connection speeds. GSBE radio currently features all 10 tracks from the band's debut CD plus over two hours of live material.

"The plan is to add entire live shows to the mix," says Graham Spice, GSBE band member and webmaster. "Right now we have about a three hour randomly selected playlist. In the next few months we'll be adding as many live tunes as possible. It's pretty cool technology, and it sounds fantastic!" Spice quipped.

The Guy Smiley Blues Exchange's website features a dynamically served page that shows the song currently playing, the last five songs played, a link to Amazon.com to buy the band's CD, as well as links to the band's homepage and to SHOUTCast.com. A California-based company called Live365 is hosting the stream for the band.

"The band is excited about our future with GSBE radio as a promotional tool," Spice adds. "People have come down on the technology saying that it kills the chances of making money with music. I totally disagree. We are integrating our streaming netcast into our general business plan, not making the net our sole source of income. That's an important step that the major labels don't seem to be ready to take: the integration of old and new sources of revenue. What we're trying to do is to combine the tried-and-true sales of products like CDs and merchandise with free marketing from the Web. GSBE radio is a radio station that broadcasts our music in every city of the world 24/7. As a promotional tool, that's unbeatable."

"There are many reasons that people will continue to buy CDs, but I think that there are some important differences for our product," Spice continues. "CDs will stay around for a few more years because they are a portable, more homogenous form of listening to music. But, the key feature of The Guy Smiley Blues Exchange CD is that it is a value-added buy. The CD is not just the same 10 tracks of music played on GSBE radio, it is also an Enhanced-CD that features 5 MP3s (not available on the net or played on GSBE radio), screen savers, a professionally recorded and edited video of a live performance, a custom visual plug-in for Winamp, MP3 players for both Mac and Windows, and a few more surprises. That is to say that our band is 'selling more than music' with our products! The Enhanced-CD coupled with GSBE radio are like a virtual fan club, only you don't need stamps. This is the reason why we foresee people still purchasing the product AND listening to the streaming server. They want the portability and the value-added information from the Enhanced-CD, and they listen to GSBE radio to hear the live tracks that aren't available anywhere else."

The Guy Smiley Blues Exchange will announce more ideas for integrating the Internet and the listener around the first of the year. The band is going to attempt to combine some of the freshest musical compositions with the most technologically advanced promotion and marketing techniques in use today. Keep your eyes and ears out for The Guy Smiley Blues Exchange: the band on the cutting edge of music and technology. In the mean time, be sure to check out their latest development: GSBE radio

Streaming MP3s require a stream-enabled player. GSBE radio has tested and approved the media players Winamp for Windows and Linux or Audion for Macintosh. Check http://www.winamp.com or http://www.panic.com for more info.

     Psychafunkadoobalicious.

"A wicked cayenne-spicy mix of brassy salsa, New Orleans jazz, P-funk, and cocktail exotica," says Jim Ridley of The Nashville Scene. This band pulls from seven different backgrounds, seven different sets of influences...of course it's going to be diverse.

The Guy Smiley Blues Exchange, formed in 1993, has been compared to groove/jazz artists like Groove Collective, Phish, and Medeski Martin & Wood. The main focus of the band are the three saxophones - alto, tenor, and baritone. Add to that drums, bass, and keyboard, guitar, and trumpet. Top it off with percussion and vibraphone and you've got a unique style. Their sound is a collection of many musical styles. In one live performance they play everything from straight-ahead jazz to rock to Latin to funk. They stretch the word m-u-s-i-c.

Their debut CD was recorded at White House Studios in Nashville, TN. The entire project was recorded, mixed, and produced by the band in two months with advice from Richard Dodd (Traveling Wilburys, Tom Petty) and Alan Shacklock (Pink Floyd, Roger Waters). The self-titled CD was nominated for Best R&B Album of the Year by the Nashville Music Awards. The project is an Enhanced CD with computer enhanced files, including 5 MP3s, screen savers, a live video, and much more.

The seven members of the group have combined their experiences, their influences, and their energy to create The Guy Smiley Blues Exchange.

Music Row Magazine
"Frank Zappa meets George Clinton meets Miles Davis meets Phish. Truly a wild funk ride."

Evansville Crescent
"A new alternative for a funkadelic night on the town. If you're not tapping your foot after a couple of songs, check your pulse."

The Tennessean
"They've exchanged blues sensibilities for the jazz and avant-funk side of the musical spectrum. It's hip, Gen-X jazz that's clever without being strained or pretentious."
